These temples were built during a span of 200 years between 10th and 12th centuries. There were 80 temples out of which 25 have survived the ravages of time and are in reasonable state of preservation. The temples became famous for their erotic engravings. The people living in the area always knew of the temples. The temples came into limelight when these were pointed out to an Englishman during 19th century.
